Transporting electricity to its member systems throughout the Rocky Mountain region, Tri-State Generation & Transmission is a wholesale electric power supplier serving over 1 million consumers.  Any delays in delivery to their consumers directly affect the bottom line, and therefore the monitoring and maintaining of business reporting is crucial.  However due to a variety of old, legacy systems, and disparate data across the organization, their existing reporting applications were inadequate, with most reports requiring customized IT application development.   Critical reports needed by top-level executives to assess and make decisions based on company profitability were placing excessive requirements on an already overworked IT staff.  It was their need to combine these needs into a Reporting Environment Data Warehouse (REDW) that could generate reports utilizing SAS Enterprise Business Intelligence suite of products as well as allow access to the data from other legacy products.

Solution Delivered
With existing SAS software and experience on-site, Tri-State engaged Solution Design Team (SDT) to help leverage their investment in SAS to streamline reporting timeliness.  SDT provided a robust architecture design that integrated all necessary data sources into a Data Warehouse which was optimized for performance and decision-making.  Regardless of platform, end-users can access data across the enterprise from the “REDW” for general reporting, drill/down OLAP exploration, and also What-If type analysis – all in real time.  Reports that formerly took over one week are now down as fast as you can point-n-click from an easy-to-use graphical interface.  Future enhancements will be to continue leveraging the REDW for top-level executives by producing dashboard type interfaces that can help quickly and visually give executives the ability to monitor and manage their business.
